Web: https://remhub-project.eu/

REMHub project proposal will create a cutting-edge digital innovation hub propeling EU excellence for rare earth elements (REEs) and magnets. REMHub will develop test and pilot novel technologies for exploration and primary production of rare earths and recovering rare earths from side streams to enhance supply security of REEs in EU. In addition, Re-X (Recycle, Reuse, refurbishment and repurposing) technologies for rare earths and valuable metals from end-of-life products as well as electric machine design for easier permanent magnet recycling will be developed. The project will also identify and engage relevant stakeholders for developing REE value chain in EU. In addition, in the innovation hub will ensure that the novel technologies developed in the project will be commercialized and offered as services in a digital platform. The project will also have dynamic communication and dissemination with the aim to involve and engage the public to develop trust and awareness related to REEs as well as to build capacity in EU. The hub targets transformative material sourcing for REEs and REE magnets, including traceability, digital twinning, and digital passport. The project partners cover the entire REE value chain starting from mineral exploration, through mineral processing and refining to metal production and magnet making as well as recycling. The project incorporates safe and sustainable by design framework (SSbD) including design for Re-X (recycling, re-use, refurbishment, repurposing) approach integrating easy dismantling and circularity properties. REMHub will significantly improve the supply security of REEs in the EU and with the digital innovation hub considerably accelerate the development of technologies and services to faster and easier market entry.

Web: https://incircular-project.eu/

The INCIRCULAR project aims to unleash the innovation potential of three European regions in the plastics circular economy, thanks in particular to a cascade funding system. Indeed, innovative solutions are needed to produce new types of environmentally-friendly plastics, while offering technical properties and costs similar to those of petro-sourced plastics currently on the market. INCIRCULAR brings together three regional ecosystems with complementary capabilities to carry out the technological scale-up (TRL 6 to 9) of a unique process implemented by the TECOS technical center in Slovenia, while using technologies made available by the Spanish and French partners . The aim is to produce plastic products made from 100% recycled plastic, 100% recyclable and with technical properties similar or superior to those of current plastics. This material will be directly integrated into the production chain at the Gorenje (Slovenia) industrial site, in collaboration with Omaplast, which will collect, sort and recycle it on site.

Currently chrome (VI) being a carcinogen, 16 million people are at risk due to critical air, soil and water contamination, eliciting the need for a replacement majorly for the production of construction elements and active parts of automobiles like valves. CHRIIIPL ambition lies in just such a replacement at the industrial level by chrome (III) which is an eco-friendly essential oligo nutrient form, necessary for the correct metabolism of sugars in the human body and is characterized by a toxicity close to 0. The innovation created by CHRIIIPL will make it possible to significantly reduce the carcinogenic load on ecosystems affected by the production of automotive parts. This applies in the first place to production, with around 250 000 tons of a chrome plating per year and about 900 000 workers in the EU directly related to the production and estimated to be exposed to the substance.

The goal of the PIMAP4Sustainability (Photonics for International Markets and Applications for Sustainability) Euroclusters project open call is to financially support photonics, advanced materials and advanced manufacturing SMEs to develop innovative projects.

Speak for Nature: Interdisciplinary Approaches on Ecological Justice

Giving legal voice to non-human nature

Today's ecological challenges require new methods to understand how we interact with the environment. The EU-funded Speak4Nature project team will build on the concept of ecological justice – the distributive paradigm in which nature is no longer simply a “factor” of justice but a “receiver” actor – to develop new socio-legal instruments and methodologies with the aim of providing a theoretical and operational basis in social and environmental sciences to guarantee the participation of non-human nature in legal instances. By defining why and how the various social sciences extend moral consideration to non-human nature, the project will conceptualize ecological justice from a multidisciplinary, intersectoral and international perspective. The work of the project team will ultimately lead to ensuring interhuman, interspecies and intergenerational equity.
